International Womens Day

Happy International Women’s day!

A survey taken in 2009 showed that over 80% of the Graphic Design industry where male but taking a look at these results now they have decreased to 60% male-dominated industry. Here at MediaVita, we are proud to support women in the graphic design industry, we see all our staff as talented in their own specialised areas regardless of their gender.

Since 2020 International Women’s day is all about encouraging equality, we wanted to speak to Beck, our very own Graphic Designer to hopefully help inspire more women to join this creative and exciting industry!

Beck is 26 years old and joined the team in October 2018! She has been an incredible asset to the team, she adapts with complete ease to any job thrown at her, from packaging to social graphics, we are very lucky to have such a talent on our team!

So let the Q&A begin…

Beck, what inspired you to become a Graphic Designer?

I have always had a creative side to me and wanted to translate this into a career in some way. As a child, I forever had a pencil in my hand and pushed myself to a bigger and better drawing each time. I knew I wanted to channel my artistic side and step into a creative role. Graphic Design was the perfect overall design role for me.

Where did you learn to become a Graphic Designer?

I studied with the University of Arts London, located in the Southend. Here I received a 2:1 in Graphic Design. On top of this, I was also very fortunate to win a prestigious D&AD pencil award.

What is your favourite project you have worked on here at MediaVita?

I’m not sure I could ever choose only one favourite… the great thing about my job is that every day is different! I love the versatility of my role. Although illustration and branding projects are probably my favourite thing to work on, it is a pretty cool feeling when you see your ideas come to life.

What would you say are the best and the hardest parts of being a Graphic Designer?

There are definitely more pros than cons to my job. Some of the pros are that I get to be creative every day, I love coming to work and never get that dreaded Monday morning feeling. Every day is different. You get to see your own work out in the real world, the feeling of this never gets old.
Now I wouldn’t necessarily say this is a con but you definitely need to be dedicated and you are bound to get creators block from time to time. As long as you don’t give up and push past this in whatever way works for you, you will bring those creative ideas right back!

What would your dream project be to work on?

I would love to work on some more food or drink industry branding and packaging designs. I feel you can be really creative here and create some bold designs!

Finally what words of advice would you give to anyone looking to become a Graphic Designer?

Don’t be afraid and never doubt yourself! I wasn’t sure I would ever be sat in this position, I always felt unworthy in such a talented industry. If I can push past my self-doubt and end up here with my dream job, so can you.
